1. Edwards: Women who inspire me

John Edwards: Women who inspire me

I am blessed to have strong women in my life who inspire me, who teach me, who challenge me and who support me. On issue after issue, I turn to my wife Elizabeth for her insight and advice. I’ve learned so much from her, my daughter Cate and my mother Bobbie. Their experiences have helped shape who I am.

I grew up in a family where my grandmother walked to work at the mill every day. My mother worked all her life too, running a shop and later working at the post office. I watched them work hard so I could have a better life—and that’s what my campaign is about. I am running for president to make sure every woman and every man has an equal opportunity to work hard and build a better life for their children.

...

Finally, it’s critical that we pass universal health care. I’ve met so many women along the campaign trail who come up to me and say that like Elizabeth, they have breast cancer, but unlike Elizabeth, they don’t have health insurance. Every American deserves quality, affordable health care.

I am running for president on behalf of women like my grandmother and my mother, like Elizabeth and Cate—women who have worked hard on behalf of their families and on behalf of the next generation. I am running for president to make sure all these women, and all Americans, have the chance to work hard and achieve their dreams.

2. Edwards Campaign: Nevada Race a Dead Heat

I love how they use the word "calls" and "characterized" as if the poll said something different.

Edwards Campaign Calls Nevada Race a Dead Heat

The Edwards campaign characterized the Nevada race as a three-way dead heat in a conference call with reporters today, pointing to poll numbers and a robust field operation in the state.

Speaking from Nevada, David Bonior, the national campaign manager, said the Edwards campaign contacted 15,000 potential caucus goers last weekend, roughly one-third of the overall expected turnout.

"This campaign is a three way race," Mr. Bonior said. "And this is a huge sign of strength for John Edwards as we march into Nevada and South Carolina."

Mr. Edwards has made 17 trips to the state, roughly the same as Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama combined, Mr. Bonior added.

The poll by the Reno Gazette-Journal, released Monday morning, showed Mr. Obama with 32 percent, Mrs. Clinton with 30 percent and Mr. Edwards with 27 percent.

"Bringing It Home" Bus Tour - Edwards Discusses Bold Plan To Protect The Environment And Fight Global Warming

Edwards will take on the big oil companies, polluters and power companies to address the great environmental challenge of our lifetime

Pawleys Island, South Carolina – On the fourth day of the his "Bringing It Home" bus tour across South Carolina, John Edwards today discussed his bold plan to protect South Carolina's coast, fight global warming and build a new energy economy that will create more than one million new jobs. At a town hall in Pawleys Island, Edwards outlined his plan to take on the big oil companies, power companies and polluters and achieve energy independence.

Throughout the tour, Edwards has been discussing his plans to bring about bold change and fight for the middle class. Born to a working class family in South Carolina and raised in small, rural mill towns, Edwards has spent his life taking on powerful interests on behalf of hard-working families like the ones he grew up with.

"We know that global warming is a crisis," said Edwards. "We know the need for action is urgent. And we know that the steps we need to take are sitting right in front of us. But Washington is not taking them. I see the oil and gas companies blocking progress by spending millions of dollars and deploying hundreds of lobbyists to Washington to make sure that America stays addicted to foreign oil and fossil fuels.

4. Edwards Followed By Giant Sweet Potato

Great story dealing with the environment with a twist.

Edwards Followed By Giant Sweet Potato

John Edwards may or may not have a stalker. Fortunately for the former North Carolina senator, she’s easy to spot. After all, she carries with her an abnormally large vegetable.

Confused? Let me explain...

I first saw her two days ago at a Charleston, S.C. food bank lugging around a gargantuan 17-pound sweet potato. At the time, I figured she was just a local farmer who was simply proud of a prize-winning crop and wanted to show it off to the world.

Then she popped up again yesterday. This time, it was at a town hall meeting in Summerville, S.C., leading off the Q and A session with a question about the environment. And she had the same damn sweet potato in hand. I referred to her in my notes as "Sweet Potato Lady."

And then as the Q and A at today’s town hall meeting in Barnwell was wrapping up, Edwards randomly called on the same familiar face. Yes, it was Sweet Potato Lady again...

"Senator, I saw you yesterday..." she began.

"Oh I knew I recognized you!" cut in Edwards, genuinely surprised. "You should go carry that sweet potato around!"

5. Edwards To Launch "America Rising, Coast To Coast" Tour

Edwards To Launch "America Rising, Coast To Coast" Tour

Edwards will bring his fight for the middle class to red states and blue states from the West Coast to the East Coast

Chapel Hill, North Carolina – On Thursday, January 17th, 2008, John Edwards will launch a three-day "America Rising, Coast to Coast" tour to bring his fight for the middle class to states from the West Coast to the Heartland to the East Coast. Over the course of three days, Edwards will visit Nevada, four February 5th states and his native state of South Carolina to share with voters his detailed plans to stand up to the powerful interests and make sure hard-working families can get ahead.

"For too long, powerful entrenched interests have gotten every break imaginable from Washington, while middle class families have struggled," said Edwards. "I have spent my entire life standing up and fighting for regular Americans against these interests – and beating them. I know that if we fight together we can get the change we need and take our country back -- because every time we fight for jobs, for families, for the middle class, for universal health care, America rises."

As a sign of his commitment to making sure the voices of all Americans are heard in Washington. Edwards will travel to red states and blue states from the West Coast to the East Coast. Born to a working class family and raised in small, rural mill towns, Edwards understands the struggles facing hard-working families. His message of change is resonating with voters in red states and blue states, in big cities and small towns.

During the tour, Edwards will visit Nevada, California, Oklahoma, Missouri, Georgia and South Carolina to demonstrate his broad, coast to coast strength and his advantage as the best candidate to win the general election.

SC: Edwards Calls for Ban on Coal Plants

...

"My view is that needs to stop," Edwards said of the $1 billion, 600-megawatt plant set to be built along the Pee Dee River in this early voting state. Santee Cooper officials are awaiting a final permit from state environmental regulators.

The utility's officials say they need the plant to meet energy demands, and can't wait for newer or cleaner energy to be developed, but have said the plant will be environmentally responsible. They hope to have it running about 2012.

Edwards, a former North Carolina senator, told about 150 people at a campus of Coastal Carolina University that coal-fired plants are "taking a bad situation and making it worse."

He also said he was opposed to new nuclear power plants and that the U.S. has no credibility in global warming discussions. "We are the worst polluter on the planet," Edwards said.

7. Words on Edwards

Paul Krugman, Christopher Hayes, Ezra Klein On John Edwards

Paul Krugman in The New York Times:

"On the Democratic side, John Edwards, although never the front-runner, has been driving his party's policy agenda. He's done it again on economic stimulus: last month, before the economic consensus turned as negative as it now has, he proposed a stimulus package including aid to unemployed workers, aid to cash-strapped state and local governments, public investment in alternative energy, and other measures."

Christopher Hayes, in The Nation:

"The fact remains that the Edwards campaign has set the domestic policy agenda for the entire field. He was the first with a bold universal health care plan, the first with an ambitious climate change proposal that called for cap-and-trade, and the leader on reforming predatory lending practices and raising the minimum wage to a level where it regains its lost purchasing power."

Ezra Klein, in The American Prospect:

"Much more so than Obama, it was Edwards who forced a new style of politics, untethered by the fear and timidity of the 90s,adamant that liberalism was an electoral boon and economic justice a popular sentiment. Knowing they had to defend against his challenge, both Hillary and Obama edged closer to his appeal.

"It left the Democrats in a much stronger position overall, and forced them to argue for, and commit to, a much broader and more inspiring agenda than we otherwise might have seen."
