As kossack decider06 said Wednesday night on Air America:
Columbus, Kentucky is so rural, it is an hour away from the nearest McDonald's.
In a town of 229, John Edwards drew a crowd of 1800 people. Now, remember this is one of the most rural areas of the country. That is a 800% turnout. While other candidates have boasted their turnouts in cities like Atlanta and New York, you cannot deny the fact that John Edwards is a Democrat that is appealing to rural voters in a way no other Democratic presidential candidate has in a very long time.
I like Kos, but he isn't always right. His opinion is respected around the blogsphere, but it is just that... his opinion. Now, one problem I have with Kos' declaration of a possible catastrophe is that it has no previous instance to back up his assertion. For this, lets go to the wolf...
I doubt that the spending caps that come with public funds will cripple Edwards in the general election, as Ezra and Markos think. We aren't talking about a congressional campaign here -- we're talking about a race for president, where free media and ads from 527 groups are going to be way more significant than anything the candidates themselves put on air.
Manchester, New Hampshire – Today at his MySpace-MTV forum in New Hampshire, Senator John Edwards announced a bold ten-part agenda to restore America's moral authority in the world and build One America where every young person has the opportunity to go as far as their talents can carry them.
"You hear all the time from political pundits that young people don't care about politics – but it's a lie," said Edwards. "Young people all over the country care about America and are engaged in bringing change to their communities.
"The truth is the power to change America is in every young person, it's in all of us," Edwards continued. "And, as we look forward to a new day, we must never forget that only by joining together and fighting for something bigger than all of us can we fix the broken system in Washington and achieve real change in America."
Will be broadcast TONIGHT ON MTV (I believe at 7pm ET, but check your local listing).
Last week, DailyKos had a diary that intentionally attempted to impugn John Edwards character.
Unfortunately, the diarist used the perception of change in John Edwards to make a conclusion that I view as grossly incorrect. The theory was prefaced as such:
He says he regrets the war vote, yet there is solid evidence of his cheerleading leading into the war.
It is not contradictory, let alone dishonest, to have supported a vote in the past and to regret that vote. In this case, it is called progression. The conclusion of the diarist is if John Edwards is different, he must be a panderer, an opportunist, and a fraud.
That is obviously incorrect as people change on a daily basis and it isn't for some sinister purpose. Also, the obvious contrast with Bush's absolute stubbornness is actually quite complimentary to John Edwards.
The progressive policies and plans that John Edwards is putting forth, speak for themselves. This has lead to the acceptance by many that John Edwards is the most likely to succeed in implementing progressive ideas. Therefore, the question that is being asked is not so much how he is different, but why is John Edwards different?
The resolution, sponsored by Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, passed by a 72-25 vote.
House Republican leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, said the House should consider a similar measure. But when asked if House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., would allow it, spokesman Nadeam Elshami said in an e-mail: "The House is going to devote its full attention to providing health care to children, promoting energy independence to improve America's security, reducing global warming, and responsibly redeploying U.S. forces now in Iraq.
"These are the priorities of the American people," he said.
John Solomon released yet another article today bashing a Democrat.
...
Lerach, his family and members of his new law Lerach Coughlin law firm accounted for nearly $78,000 in donations to Edwards' campaign in the first half of this year, making the trial lawyer one of the North Carolina Democrat's leading "bundlers" of contributions.
In the midst of that fundraising, Lerach negotiated behind the scenes for a plea deal that was consummated on Tuesday and will send him to federal prison for at least 12 months on a conspiracy charge involving his past legal work as partner in the Milberg Weiss law firm.
...
John Solomon specializes in creating an aura of scandal where none exists.
Edwards today took on the straddle the fence strategies to "begin" to end the war.
...
We don’t need to ‘begin’ to end the war now. What we need to do now is actually end the war.
...
Some, like Senator Obama, have said we should only ‘begin’ to end this war now. Senator Obama would withdraw only 1-2 combat brigades a month between now and the end of next year, which for the next several months could essentially mimic the president’s own plans to withdraw 30,000 troops by next summer.
I have always liked Elizabeth Edwards, admired her both for her obvious strengths and her obvious weaknesses (how can you not admire a woman in her position who isn’t perfectly thin?); respected her for her courage in the face of terrible tragedy, as well as for her intelligence and honesty; appreciated the strength of her commitment to her husband and family, and even envied her for the kind of marriage and partnership that eludes so many smart women of our generation.
...
Isn't it nice to mix it in with all those nice compliments.
I question, is not being "perfectly thin" an "obvious weakness" for someone "in her position?"
That means only that he is within the margin of error of Obama in this poll. The truth is that the trends show Edwards down still, but the media narrative of a two way race has just been directly challenged.
John Edwards drew further distinction between himself and Obama on the inclusion or exclusion of Washington lobbyists. This reflects a key difference between the candidates where Obama wants to publicly expose lobbyist's obstruction while Edwards wants to stop it altogether.
Edwards Blasts Obama Lobbyist Plan as 'Fantasy' Former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards derided as a "fantasy" Friday Sen. Barack Obama's, D-Ill., hope that he can work with Washington lobbyists to bring about change as he seeks to sharpen his differences with the Democratic front-runners in advance of Sunday's ABC News Democratic debate in Des Moines, Iowa.
Edwards said in an interview with ABC News aboard his campaign bus that Obama's statement that lobbyists would "have a seat at the table" under his administration misunderstands the nature of their power over Washington business.
John Edwards is calling for a movement to stop lobbyist influence in Washington. He wants the ENTIRE Democratic Party to lead by example. That includes the DNC, DCCC, and DSCC.
John Edwards is issuing a challenge to his own party, demanding that all of the Democratic party committees stop taking lobbyists money — and demanding that Obama join him in this challenge to the Dems.
In a conference call just now with reporters, Edwards advisers announced that they are sending a letter to the other Dem candidates and to the DNC, the DCCC and DSCC, calling upon everyone to stop taking lobbyist money.
